How far do NFC tags work ?

With a mobile phone and a large NFC tag, up to 10cm 4 inches is generally regarded as the limit.

The theoretical limit with very large antennas and certain chips ISO15693 can be much further. But in reality it's very difficult to achieve. If you need more than 10cm then generally you need a different technology.

In essence NFC is just that - near field. It's a limit of the technology but it's also exactly the purpose and benefit of the technology. You need to be close to scan and that proximity is the reason it works for so many applications.
