How do you program NFC tags?

I'd like to encode a URL of my business website page on to an NFC tag to hand out at an event. How can I do this myself?

NFC tags are easy to program and there are many apps available for reading and writing programming them such as the Seritag app. These apps allow you to encode various types of data including URLs text contact information Wi-Fi network details SMS numbers business cards and more.

However the NTAG424 is a more advanced chip that requires specialized encoding. This can be done by specific manufacturers such as Seritag.
