NFC technology has a number of use cases for meters and other similar monitoring devices :
1. Data Collection and Transmission
If the device has integrated NFC technology, then it's possible to enable the device to store and transmit data such as water usage, meter readings, and diagnostic information. This data can be collected by simply bringing an NFC reader (like a smartphone) close to the meter, making the process quick and efficient. However, the NFC technology would need to be integrated as part of the design of the electronics and design of the unit from the start.
2. Compliance and Monitoring
NFC tags applied to the outside of the device can be used for identification and therefore monitoring and compliance by engineers. NFC has the additional benefits over similar technology such as QR codes as the tags can integrated into the device, hidden from obvious view, used in dark locations and are more resistant to tampering and print fading.
3. Enhanced Security
The more secure NFC tags can be used to prevent tampering or changing of the device. An integrated or tamper type tag applied to the device can provide confidence that the device is genuine and hasn't been replaced.
4. User Interaction
Applying NFC tags to meters can allow users to interact and gain information about user manuals, maintenance, repair, digital product passport information and more. At the simplest, maintenance companies can provide the users with quick and easy re-booking and repair information.
