what kind of scanner not phone do I need to use for minimum 10cm read range?

Most USB readers, such as the ACS ACR122U or HID Omnikey 5022 can reach 10cm provided you also use a good size NFC tag. We would suggest at least 29mm but better 38mm or larger.
