But why does it scan better from an app ? why is that ?

The iOS software increases the power when NFC tags are scanned from an app. This has more or less always been the case. This 'new' issue where the power for background tag scanning - scanning without an app - is something else and something new.

Having the same problem. I have a few homekit tags and a contact card which both were working just fine until a recent upgrade. tags all scan through an nfc app but the old way of just holding the phone over the tag really struggles. it does scan but you have to almost touch ?

Go to setting and change airdrop from contacts only to the setting from contacts only to everyone and then change it back again

I have the same issue it works from 3 away using NFC Tools app but I pretty much have to rub the phone on top of the tag multiple times for it to register without an app.
Which phone and version of iOS are you using ?

The problem does seem to revolve specifically around the iPhone 13 Pro. We have customers on the iPhone 13 Pro Max that aren't experiencing the problem. If we can find a solution other than scanning from an app then we will post it here.

For anyone reading this having problems scanning remember that the reader on the iphone is on the top edge of the phone. i came from using an android phone which has the reader in the middle of the back and i was putitng the wrong part of the phone against the tag.

There is a theory that if you encode an NFC tag using shortcuts on your iPhone then that iPhone will scan all other NFC tags properly or better. Someone else mentioned that anyone else scanning that shortcut tag will also gain from better scanning.
